Peroneal tendonitis develops when the tendons running along the outside of the ankle become irritated from repeated stress. These muscles work continuously to stabilize the ankle and help control foot movement during walking, running, and other weight-bearing activities. They also play an important role when the foot lands on uneven ground, helping the ankle remain steady as your body shifts from one step to the next.


Why Tight Peroneal Muscles Increase Tendon Stress

Every muscle transfers force through its tendon. When the peroneus longus or peroneus brevis lose the ability to fully lengthen, movement through the muscle-tendon unit may become less efficient, increasing the friction and stress on the tendons during activity.
